If you have ever seen it on television before and wondered what it is, let us introduce you to it. We are talking about abacus math, of course. A favourite among students of Soroban maths, abacus math is a way of counting and doing mathematical calculations using an abacus.

Abacus, or counting frame, is a tool popularised by China and Eastern Europe as early as the 1400’s. Consisting of a frame, some wire and a select few shifting beads. The more wires and beads you have, the higher your numbers can go. For example, a 10-wire abacus can represent a numerical value up to 9,999,999,999.

This might seem way too high of a number for any schoolchild to consider. And it might even seem pointless in the age of pocket calculators and other technologies. But, here are a few reasons why abacus math is an art that your child must learn.

It helps with maths and science

Any abacus math franchise will tell you about the success they have with children using this format. Schoolchildren with the mathematical processing ability, previously only deemed possible by computers, performing exceptionally well in both science and math classes.

An abacus math franchise like A+ Students have track records of helping children improve their calculating abilities through the teachings of Soroban Maths and Abacus Maths.

It’s way more interactive than a calculator

If you want your child to indulge themselves in maths, your only chance is to make it fun. With abacus math, your child will enjoy maths as though they were playing with another toy in the collection. The colourful and playful beads make the abacus a fun instrument to work with, thus introducing your kids to the fun side of math.

It’s more advantageous than a calculator

When your child makes use of a calculator, they give away their ability to process something. This is not advantageous for your child as they never learn how to calculate anything. With abacus math, they learn how to process large numerical values in their head with the use of the most powerful computer in the world, your brain.
